Former GW basketball player Xavier Alexander, who left the team and school two weeks ago for undisclosed reasons, said “GW was just not a good fit for me,” in a phone interview with The Hatchet Saturday.
The guard-forward is currently back in his native Oklahoma, where he says he has been in talks with the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, the University of North Texas and UNC-Wilmington. In the mean time, he will likely enroll in Oklahoma as a student this semester, he said, though he cannot receive a scholarship until next spring per the NCAA’s transfer rules.
“I can pick any one of those four schools,” Alexander said.
Alexander added that he wanted to transfer after his freshman season but was encouraged to give the situation another shot because it is common to have difficulty adjusting during one’s first year. This season, however, things did not get better.
“Coach (Karl) Hobbs’ coaching style works for some, but different styles fit different players,” he said.
When asked what part of Hobbs’ style clashed with his own, Alexander declined to elaborate.
As for the rest of his former team’s season, he noted that the team’s play has improved recently but that “Guys are pretty down right now. There’s so much stuff going on behind the scenes that even if we were winning people were not really happy,” though he again declined to go into specifics.
Alexander also said he expected senior forward and friend Rob Diggs to have a successful rest of his season as his collegiate career winds down and Diggs has to make an impression on professional teams.
The 6-foot-7 defensive specialist also had a word to say about GW and its overall program.
“GW is a great school and a great basketball program, it just wasn’t for me,” he said. “It just didn’t fit; I’m sure they have some recruits coming in and that will get them going.”
