The slide continues for the GW men’s basketball team, who lost their seventh consecutive game in a 63-59 squeaker at Saint Louis Saturday night.
The game was tight almost the entire way through, with GW (6-9, 0-3 Atlantic 10) leading by one at the half and the teams matching one another blow for blow after the break. After opening a slim 50-48 lead with just over seven minutes to play, the Colonials went cold, failing to score for nearly four minutes as the Billikens put up nine unanswered points to build a seven-point advantage.
GW cut it the margin to one with 40 seconds remaining, but Saint Louis was able to extend the ensuing possession the duration of the shot clock before scoring on a layup by Barry Eberhardt. Sophomore Travis King was whistled for a foul on the play, giving Eberhardt a trip to the line that he used to make it a two-possession game with four seconds on the clock.
Senior Wynton Witherspoon, who was benched for the team’s four-game road trip in late December, appears to be taking advantage of his newfound playing time during A-10 play. The Georgia native paced the Colonials in both points (15) and rebounds (seven). Freshman Aaron Ware was the only GW player to join him in double digits, scoring 12 points on five-for-five shooting.
Also of note was the absence of leading scorer Damian Hollis, who did not play as a precautionary measure after sustaining a mild concussion at Duquesne Wednesday.
