It sure doesn’t seem like it was pretty, but the Colonials downed Loyola (Md.) 53-35 at Smith Center this afternoon in a game that saw the two teams combine to shoot less than 30 percent from the floor.
GW (7-4) out-played the visiting Greyhounds inside, enjoying a 22-8 scoring advantage in the paint and riding double-double performances from sophomore forward Ivy Abiona and senior center Jessica Adair. The two tied for the team lead with a dozen rebounds apiece, with Adair scoring 13 points and Abiona adding 10. Adair also paced the team with four blocks and chipped in three assists to boot.
Also scoring in double figures was senior Yolanda Lavender, who scored 10 points while dishing a team-high five assists. Lavender started for the second time in as many games as a Colonial, having made her GW debut in last Sunday’s win over Princeton. The 5-foot-9 point guard transferred from Wake Forest last winter and had to sit out two semesters per NCAA transfer rules.
Freshman Tiana Myers started alongside Lavender at guard, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds.
Outside the individual numbers, things got a bit uglier. GW’s bench combined to miss all 13 of its shot attempts from the floor, totaling seven points, all of which came from the free-throw line. The Colonials made a clean third of their field goals as a team, shooting at that same 33.3 percent clip in each half as well.
