Jazmine Adair Converts Two Foul Shots With Six Seconds Left for Victory

WASHINGTON, DC – Senior Jazmine Adair (Washington, DC/Anacostia) capped a game-ending 7-0 run with two free throws with six seconds remaining to lift the George Washington women’s basketball team to the title of its own Thanksgiving Classic, 67-65, over Hartford at Charles E. Smith Center Saturday evening.

GW (4-2) trailed by five, 65-60, with less than two minutes to play, but freshman Tiana Myers (Camp Springs, MD/Bishop McNamara) drove baseline for a layup and seniors Antelia Parrish (Washington, DC/Bishop McNamara), Jessica Adair (Washington, DC/Anacostia) and Jazmine Adair converted 5-of-6 free-throw attempts in the final 62 seconds for the come-from-behind victory in the Colonials’ second annual Classic.

Jessica Adair, who led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting, was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Player and was joined by Parrish, who scored all 11 of her points in the final 11 minutes, on the All-Tournament Team. Jazmine Adair grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and added nine points, including the game-winning free throws.

Sophomore Erica Rivera (Elizabeth City, NC/Pasquotank County) provided a spark in 30 minutes off the bench with eight points, four assists and three steals. Myers also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Hartford (4-3) used a late 13-3 run to grab its largest lead of the second half, 65-60, with 2:05 to play. All-Tournament Team selection Lisa Etienne scored five points during the rally, including a three-pointer which gave the Hawks a 62-60 lead at the 2:20 mark. Diana Delva got a steal on GW’s next possession and converted a three-point play on the other end to give Hartford the five-point cushion.

Myers drove the left baseline for an easy basket to trim the deficit to 65-62 and GW promptly called timeout. After a Hawks’ turnover, Jessica Adair was fouled in the low post and hit 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Colonials within 65-63 with 1:02 left.

Etienne missed on a drive on Hartford’s next possession and fouled Parrish as she drove the lane with 19 second left. Parrish hit both shots from the line to tie the game, 65-65, and the Hawks called timeout. Etienne came up short on a jumper from the elbow, Jazmine Adair was fouled on the rebound with six seconds to play and then calmly sank both free throws. MaryLynne Schaefer’s last-chance three-point attempt hit the front of the iron to give GW the title.

Erica Beverly led Hartford with 13 points and seven rebounds, Etienne pitched in 11 points and both were named to the All-Tournament Team.

GW shot a season-best 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the floor and 75.0 percent (18-of-24) from the foul line.

Shakira Nettles, who had 16 points to help South Alabama to a 65-61 victory over Liberty in Saturday’s consolation game, was also voted to the All-Tournament Team along with the Lady Flames’ Amber Mays.
