Junior John Coleman stood outside the West End Public Library polling station this morning, passing out flyers as he campaigned for Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2A06 commissioner.
Coleman’s competition is ANC Commissioner Florence Harmon, who ran unopposed last election. Although his name is not on the ballot and he is running as a write-in candidate, Coleman said he has a good chance of winning the position, since he said he only needs 100 votes.
He said recently neighbors began to approach him to say he had their vote. He said he wants to use his role as an active member of the community and GW to benefit the neighborhood.
“I sit at the crux of two areas of concern: GW and the community,” Coleman said.
The write-in candidate said he has connections in the D.C. City Council, GW and the neighborhood, and hopes support from these communities will help get him elected. Coleman criticized his opponent Harmon, saying she was nowhere to be seen and is not making a public effort this Election Day.
“No one is going to vote for some random name on the ticket,” Coleman said, referring to Harmon not making a public appearance.
