A bill to create more transparency in the way student organizations spend their funds passed by a wide margin at Tuesday night’s Student Association Senate meeting.
Sponsored by Sen. Logan Dobson (CCAS-U), the bill would require the SA to disclose how student organizations spend money received from the student fee account. The bill passed almost unanimously, with the lone dissenting vote coming from Sen. Arsenio Rodriguez (Law).
At the Oct. 7 SA senate meeting, the legislation had been tabled and referred to the University General Counsel’s office to determine the legal issues surrounding the publicizing of financial expenditures.
Dobson said the changes made were not substantial and the bill’s main goal remained intact.
“Essentially what we did was make it more specific,” he said.
Under the revised bill, students will be able to view an organization’s budget report, as opposed to the allocation report provided for in the earlier version of the bill. Budget reports contain more specific detail than allocation reports.
