The women’s basketball team is bringing in six recruits next year to try and rebuild after losing so many key players this season. One of the incoming freshmen is Tiana Meyers, who goes to Bishop McNamara in nearby Forestville, Md. I went to watch her play tonight in the city championship, which pitted her Mustangs against the H.D. Woodard Warriors. McNamara lost but Myers was named one of the game’s two MVPs. She had 14 points, five assists and four boards.
She started off slowly, barely touching the ball and even when she did, she was quick to pass it back. But as the game went on, I noticed that she has very good court vision. She also had a very impressive block and a couple forced steals. Though she’s a shooting guard, she passed a lot and didn’t seem eager at all for the spotlight. The player she reminded me most of from the current roster is Sarah-Jo Lawrence. Myers can drive and make a layup but she also has a nice mid-range jump shot. Of course, she’s not nearly as polished as Sarah-Jo, but Sarah-Jo didn’t get to GW playing the way she does now.
GW coaches Ali Jaques (the program’s main recruiter) and Mike Bozeman were at the game, which was at the Verizon Center and had a crowd that appeared to be equal to or larger than a women’s game at GW. Bozeman is also a former coach at McNamara. I didn’t get a chance to talk to either of them after the contest to see what they thought of Tiana’s play.
I did speak with Myers post-game and she seems very excited to get to GW. She said she’s been considering Foggy Bottom since her sophomore year of high school and she decided to come here right after she visited. She also added that GW was the only recruiting trip she went on and she was really impressed with how the team welcomed her.
I’m doing a full article for Thursday’s Hatchet on the incoming recruits and how they might fit into the squad, considering all the seniors that are departing. The other five are Kayla Miller (Wilmington, DE/5-foot-8 point guard); Tara Booker (Galloway, NJ/6-foot-1 guard/forward); Brooke Wilson (Greenbelt, MD/6-foot-2 forward); Sara Mostafa (Galloway, NJ/6-foot-5 guard/forward); and Kiara Allums (Hugo, MN/5-foot-10 guard).
