The baseball team will be playing the first official game at Nationals Park, the Nats’ new baseball stadium in Anacostia. I spoke to Ryan Hudson, an assistant in the sports information office, this morning and he told me that the program is in the process of finalizing plans to play at the stadium. He said that the date of the game has not yet been scheduled and the opponent is not final, but there are plans for the Colonials to host an official contest there. Hudson also added that tickets will be distributed privately through GW and it is thus not open to the public. Information on ticketing for this game is not yet available.
The contest will most likely be in early or mid-March, since the Nats play their first game at the stadium on March 29, against the Orioles. GW has home games against Yale on March 1 and 2, William & Mary March 5, Oakland March 6 and 7, and Saint Joseph’s March 21 and 22 before the Nats take the field.
Hudson said he thinks the deal came about because of the program’s connections to the Nationals organization. The team is partially owned by Theodore Lerner, who is part of a family that has made substantial donations to the University (the Lerner Health and Wellness Center) over the years. The nats have also drafted a few former GW baseball players in past seasons, most notably pitcher Mike O’Conner two years ago.
