Far too often, the sports section gets caught up in basketball coverage. Because of basketball’s prominence and our lack of space in the print edition, most news from around GW athletics won’t make it into the newspaper. I’m going to do my best to keep up with every other sport right here on the blog.
Let’s start with tennis. The men’s team defeated Howard, 7-0, while the women fell at Old Dominion, 6-1. The men are now 4-3 while the women are 4-2. The teams play home matches at the Regency Sport & Health Club in McLean, Va., until March 2, when they move outside to the Vern.
Gymnastics finished third of four teams but scored a season-high 192.075 points in a meet at NC State. Auburn University finished first, followed by the Wolfpack and the Colonials and Texas Women’s University bringing up the rear. Junior Kristen Simpson had the team’s best individual performance, finishing tied for seventh on the vault.
Men’s and women’s swimming concluded their regular seasons with losses at George Mason Saturday afternoon, losing 122-96 and 130-84, respectively. Junior Lauren Fuchs was the only member of the women’s squad to win a race, while junior David Zenk had two victories and freshman Andrew Maguire one win. Both squads will travel to Buffalo, Ny., Feb. 20-23 for Atlantic 10 Championships.
Men’s squash defeated the University of North Carolina, 8-1. Seven of the squad’s eight wins were in straight sets, with senior Jarryd Commerford, who plays in the Colonials’ top position, needing a fourth set to find victory. GW is now 7-8 on the season.
And now for a little bit of basketball. Junior Rob Diggs was named the A-10 Player of the Week after scoring 20 points on 10-for-10 shooting in a 61-59 loss against Saint Joseph’s last Wednesday. Diggs leads the Colonials with 13.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game. It’s the first weekly honor for the program since Maureece Rice was named Player of the Week Jan. 7, 2007.
