Update, 7:54 p.m….The Colonials trail 37-24 at the half. Sophomore Damian Hollis has nine points, senior Maureece Rice eight and junior Rob Diggs seven. They are the only Colonials to score thus far. Fordham’s Bryant Dunster and Marcus Stout each have eight points.
The Colonials have not been able to defend the three, as the Rams have hit seven of them, including four in a row midway through the half. GW also has nine turnovers, while Fordham has one. Shooting percentages and rebounding are about equal for both teams.
Update, 6:55 p.m….Fordham sports information director Joe DiBari has informed me that Fordham head coach Dereck Whittenburg is not on the sidelines and will not be coaching tonight due to illness. DiBari said Whittenburg may show up later in the game but is not expected to be here
5:10 p.m…I’m here at Rose Hill Gymnasium in the Bronx, New York where GW (5-6, 1-0) faces Fordham (6-8, 0-2). The Rams are coming off a 68-50 loss at Xavier while the Colonials last played Saint Louis at Smith Center, winning 49-20. Fordham is led by senior forward Bryan Dunston, who averages 15.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
Starting with tonight’s game, we are going to begin posting information and photos of opponents’ arenas when we travel with both the men’s and women’s team. Smith Center is always a hot topic of discussion among GW students and those who follow the basketball programs, so this will give everyone a better idea of what other Atlantic 10 schools have to offer.
Rose Hill gym seats 3,470 and has been open since January of 1925. It is much smaller than Smith Center. The student sections are right behind two two baskets, with additional seating running the length of the court on either side. There is no upper section anywhere; just one set of seats. While it is old, it is also pretty on the outside. The building is made of stone and fits in with the rest of the campus, which has a gothic feel to it.
