The University Police Department is investigating how fecal matter appeared in the lobby and stairwell of Gelman Library at around 8 p.m. Monday evening.
UPD and library officials said they could not comment on the situation because it is being investigated.
“The issue that we have is since it’s under investigation by UPD we can’t really comment on it,” said Gale Etschmaier, associate University librarian for public services.
“Of course the first priority was to contact facilities and housekeeping,” she said. “We wanted to make sure the facility was secure and conducive to student use.”
Some students have speculated that a blind patron’s Seeing Eye dog caused it or that it was the result of a prank.
UPD is investigating the incident. UPD Chief Dolores Stafford said: “I have no information indicating that anyone was detained or questioned as part of the investigation into that incident.”
