Emmett Smith, an employee for nearly 27 years, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack.
Smith, 59, worked in various University offices ranging from the University Police Department to his latest position as media lab operations supervisor in the School of Media and Public Affairs. He held that position since 1993.
“Emmett Smith was the kind of person who warmed the hearts of every person lucky enough to meet him. His charm, sincerity and selfless kindness will be painfully missed by everyone,” said Paul Fucito, SMPA director of communications.
Smith managed the technical equipment on the SMPA’s fifth floor.
“We talked about families . we spoke about advice dealing with our sons. (Smith) was my go-to person with questions like that,” said Maria Lourdes George, SMPA office supervisor.
Fucito said he was also sought parenting advice from Smith.
“I will personally miss his thoughtful, fatherly advice regarding my newborn son,” Fucito said.
Before coming to GW, Smith served in the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the Prince William Lodge of the Masons and an avid scholar of medieval and renaissance British and European history.
Smith is survived by his wife of 25 years Fennie and his son Christopher. The funeral service will be Friday, with a 10 a.m. viewing and services at 11 a.m. at First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 602 N St., N.W.
