Phew! I got an email question about it so finally, we can talk about the Hatchet basketball magazine! The magazine was received by season ticket holders in a ticket package for the upcoming year. A lot of work went into the magazine. Let me explain.
The University approached us about possibly creating a magazine chronicling the special year in GW basketball. Michael Barnett, the former editor of The Hatchet and also the president of Hatchet Publications Inc., negotiated a deal with the University. GW and The Hatchet – which is otherwise financially and editorially independent from the University—would partner on the magazine. All we had to do was produce the editorial content, which sounded easy at the time and still seems like a pretty light task. It wasn’t.
On top of classes and producing a twice-weekly newspaper that updates online constantly, Will Dempster, myself and Andrew Alberg pulled together for seven pretty decent stories. I was the editor of the magazine and planned which stories would go in, with input from Barnett and others. The stories were written and edited by Barnett and myself but that was the easy part.
The most impressive parts of the 32-page magazine were the photo and design elements. Kyle Stoneman, possibly the best graphics person in the world, was the lead designer and did an awesome job. Sarah Brown, Kyle Cannon and Natalie Kates assisted Stoneman and also did a great job.
Last, but definitely not least, were the awesome photos that line the book. Jeff Baum, who graduated in May, traveled with Will and me and took some amazing photos. Some that made their way in the magazine never saw the pages of The Hatchet.
From here, I’m not sure how to get your hands on one if you aren’t a season ticket holder. The communications office of Student and Academic Support Services holds the printing rights.
