So the men’s basketball season is finally over. No more traveling, early morning flights to Ohio or A-10 conference calls. Now that the men have hung the sneakers up until next season, it’s time for even the Hatchet to move on, kinda.
The women are still in it an will face Tennessee tomorrow in Norfolk, Va. Hatchet staff writer Joanna Shapes is in Norfolk with the ladies and will stick with them until they get knocked out.
Even though the season is over, there is always men’s basketball news and the Hatchet will always be the best source for this. We will continue to bring you news all year round, including our planned coverage of the NBA pre-draft camp, this year in Orlando, Fla.
Spring sports at GW are interesting. Baseball and softball are pretty big but baseball is tough to cover. They play at Barcroft Field in Virginia, which makes covering them tough. We are going to make a concerted effort this year and we are currently in the process of selecting a beat writer.
In the fall, golf was having their best season in ages but also is one of the more difficult teams to cover. They have a chance to go to the NCAA tournament, in which case I am going to try to make my way down.
Softball plays at Mount Vernon and we have done a good job covering them in the past. They are a fun team to watch recently and we should have some good stories coming out of that team.
Women’s lacrosse is the story of the year (off the court). As an upstart varsity program, they just missed the NCAA Tournament. Those girls can really play and we will be covering them more heavily than we ever have.
And it goes without saying that tennis and rowing will absolutely make their way into the pages of the Hatchet.
The newest and coolest thing the Hatchet will feature this spring is Nationals coverage. We did some last year but the Hatchet is lucky enough this year to have season credentials to the Washington Nationals. We will be bringing you features, columns, blog posts and other cool bits from RFK while making it matter to the GW community. I’m pumped and you should be too.
If you are interested in ANY of these beats, let me know. There are people already writing but it would be nice to get some new names on the pages of the Hatchet. So if anyone’s interested that isn’t currently writing or hasn’t written for the Hatchet, feel free to email me at [email protected].
