Everyone at US Bank arena was shocked to see GW fall in its quarterfinal match up against Temple. The defeat underscores a number of issues national pundits have raised about GW during its historic season. GW lost to a team that can thrive in March during traditionally slower games. The Colonials’ depth, once its strong point, looks tenuous at best. The Colonials were incapable of moving the ball inside without Pops Mensah-Bonsu.
That said, I’m not exactly sure if I agree with the people who feel that the loss to Temple simply relegates the Colonials to a mediocre seed and an early exit from the tournament. GW was due for a loss. It seemed that there was no sense of urgency to play well because the team is used to being able to make a run near the end of the game to win. I think this loss will reinstill a sense of basketball mortality in a team that did not exactly become accustomed to losing. Feeling like you are going to win every game you play is something coaches talk about as a positive, but it can also be detrimental.
As a result of the loss, GW’s tournament seed with be negatively affected. It is conceivable that the Colonials will match up as a 5 seed, but a 6 or 7 seed is far more likely. That being said, I’m not sure a single team in the tournament – especially the good teams – will relish a first or second round match against the Colonials.
We’re set to leave Cincinatti tomorrow morning for the District. If anything else happens we’ll be sure to let you know about it.
