Movin’ on up?
With wins against Xavier and Richmond, the GW men’s basketball team should be moving up in The Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches polls to be released Monday afternoon. In last week’s polls, the Colonials were ranked 10th, but it appears as though the right people lost for the Colonials to move up. No. 9 Pittsburgh lost to No. 1 Connecticut and No. 22 Georgetown this past week. No. 6 Illinois lost to an unranked Penn State. The last time GW had a single-digit ranking was the week of Jan. 3, 1956.
Wednesday vs. Dayton
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Colonials will face Atlantic 10 foe Dayton. In the teams’ last three meetings, GW has come out victorious. At UD Arena in Ohio on Feb. 24 last year, Carl Elliott drained a half-court shot to beat Dayton at the buzzer. From Jan. 22, 2000, until Feb. 18, 2004, GW went winless in six games. The Colonials will have to contain Dayton’s athletic and up-tempo style of play, a style much like their own. Dayton has three players averaging double-figure points: Brian Roberts (16.9 points per game), Norman Plummer (10.3 ppg) and Monty Scott (11.4 ppg).
