Ahh….the media hype is back. In an interview on ESPN Radio with GW coach Karl Hobbs, the announcer said that GW is sure to move up in the rankings. They may and with three more games coming up, GW has the chance to best the 1992-93 team’s record of 7-0 to start a season. Why bring up that season? Well it was pretty magical. That year, GW lost its eighth game to Pepperdine in California but won the next two games before facing West Virginia. West Virginia was a part of the Atlantic 10 back then.
This 1992-93 season was special for GW. The Colonials went 21-9 overall and 8-6 in the A-10. The first seven games were against Monmouth, Central Michigan, Bethune-Cookman, Hartford, Columbia, Tennessee State and San Diego. This out of conference schedule would have people calling for the resignation of, well everyone. That season GW lost to Pepperdine, West Virginia, Temple in overtime, Massachusetts twice, Saint Joseph’s and Rhode Island. In the A-10 touornament, GW lost to Rhode Island 86-75.
GW recieved an at large bid to the tournament and ended up in Tuscon, Ariz. GW topped New Mexico 82-68 followed by a 90-80 win over Southern.
In the Sweet 16, GW faced Michigan’s Fab Five in Seattle, Wash. The Fab Five consisted of Chris Webber, Juwon Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. This team later was stricken from the record books for violating NCAA rules, which makes it seem like GW actually made the Elite Eight that season, well maybe not.
GW lost that game 72-64 and its season was over. If GW can hold on and beat Florida International, Morgan State and UMES they have a chance at besting this legendary GW team’s winning streak.
Just food for thought…
