From an SA Senator

I have worked hard this year to reform and reorganize the student government and get our house in order.
Maybe everyone in the SA is missing the point. Each year, people attempt to “get the house in order” only to see the house get into disorder the very next year. SA officials need to stop being so defensive about their positions and their attempts to serve students and start seriously questioning why the organization devolves into petty squabbling between the branches each year.
Again, I would venture to say that the SA is comprised mostly of students more concerned with the process of governing rather than governing. Compounding the problem is that the SA really has no mandate or power except for the disbursement of the Student Fee. Read this editorial for a reiteration of the Hatchet’s position, which seems to be shared by multiple administrators. Former SA President Omar Woodard takes the Senate (and the Hatchet) to task with slightly different stance in his piece from today’s Hatchet.
Is it just coincidence that the only individuals defending the SA are the members of the SA? What would happen if the Finance committee continued to meet as independent body to distribute funds but the rest of the SA – exec, senate, and judicial, ceased to exist? This isn’t meant to be facetious. I’m just seriously wondering what would happen.
I guess I’d have to spend the $14 on the roundtrip shuttle from here to Dulles for Thanksgiving. Then again, I would still come out ahead a dollar if I hadn’t paid $15 for the student fee.
Food for thought.
