The D.C. Fire Department put out a small fire in a laundry facility dryer on the Mount Vernon Campus this afternoon. The cause of the small blaze has not been determined.
The flames appeared on the lower level of the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex at about 12:15 p.m., according to a GW advisory. As of 1 p.m., University Police were still cordoning off the section of campus near the building.
“I know the fire department responded to an alarm and were able to put it out,” said Media Relations Director Tracy Schario, adding that the gym remained closed as of 1 p.m.
During the incident, Mount Vernon shuttle buses were directed to the UPD gatehouse near W Street instead of in front of Somers Hall. Pelham Hall was evacuated during the fire, and the men’s soccer team was forced to leave the practice field while firefighters were on scene.
Schario added that the fire did not disrupt any classes or other facilities on the campus.
