More than 20 students watched their Mount Vernon Shuttle bus burst into flames late Tuesday night after being evacuated from the vehicle.
No injuries were reported in the fire, which took place on Foxhall Road in front of the German Embassy, near the Mount Vernon Campus. Metropolitan Police officials said the driver originally stopped the bus after hearing a strange noise at about 11:45 p.m.
“After starting again the driver saw the smoke and kept a cool head,” Metropolitan Police Lt. Brian Bray said. “He had everyone file off, and didn’t try anything, like putting out the fire.”Freshman Erika Hastings, who was standing about 30 feet away from the smoking shuttle, described the blaze that ensued.
“Within 10 minutes of getting off the bus, it was all in flames,” Hastings said. “I heard explosions coming from it.”
She added that within 10 minutes, D.C. police and firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the blaze.
By 12:15 a.m., the bus was no longer on fire but remained charred and smoldering in the street where it had stopped. The fire ravaged the interior of the vehicle, which was distinguishable only by its metal frame.
MPD and fire department officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. The fire happened only days after oversight of the Mount Vernon Shuttle was transferred from University Police to the Mount Vernon Campus Life office.
