The Colonials’ game at Appalachian State Wednesday night marked the second time in less than a week that GW played the Mountaineers, as both teams won at home. It was the first time GW played an out-of-conference team twice in the same year since joining the Atlantic 10 in 1982.
But the scheduling quirk is not what the Colonials initially had in mind. GW Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz said GW was set to host the College of William and Mary, St. Francis College (N.Y.) and Radford University in last week’s Red Auerbach Colonial Classic until Radford pulled out.
The change happened so late in the scheduling process, Kvancz said, that GW was concerned about not being able to put together the annual tournament. So GW agreed to travel to Boone, N.C., Wednesday night in order to get the Mountaineers to come to the Smith Center last week.
