The GW men’s tennis team ended its season with a fourth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships Saturday in Pittsburgh after losing a match for third place 4-3 to Xavier. In eerily similar fashion, the team lost 4-3 to Xavier March 31 in a match held at Duquesne, the site of the A-10 Championships.
St. Bonaventure defeated Massachusetts 4-2 in the title contest and will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. It was the Bonnies’ first A-10 title.
Xavier’s Danny Sturdevan defeated GW’s Matt Hane 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the No.1 singles match.
GW won the No. 3 singles and No. 5 singles matches. In the No. 3 singles Kinzie Wright defeated Aaron Bauer 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. GW’s Mike Melen defeated Scott Triplett 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles.
In No. 2 singles, GW’s Kevin Wright lost to Rob Bakker 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. Xavier won the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches as Ryan Potts defeated Nick Vikstrom 6-3, 6-4, and Cameron Bell defeated GW’s Brett Warner 6-3, 2-6, 4-1. Warner retired in the final set.
GW’s Kevin Wright and Drew Zamansky won the No. 1 doubles 8-3 and GW’s Hane and Kinzie Wright won the No. 2 doubles 8-4 to keep the Colonials close against Xavier.
