The GW men’s soccer team defeated the Virginia Military Institute 1-0 in the second overtime of an intense battle Friday at the VMI Parade Ground in Lexington, Va., improving its record to 2-1 on the season.
With just 22 seconds left in the match, GW junior midfielder Matt Pilkington scored the first and only goal of the game off an assist by junior forward Jason Holloway.
Other GW players fared quite well Friday. Junior Colonial goalkeeper Nick Parypinski successfully saved four Keydet shots.
The Colonials made15 shot attempts, surpassing the Keydets’ 13 shots. GW also had three more corner kicks and committed10 less fouls (36-26) than VMI.
These statistics indicate an improving and focused soccer team. In their first three matches this season, the Colonials have already scored six times and are averaging just under 12 shots a game.
GW will host St. Francis College (N.Y.) Tuesday at 2 p.m. at South Riding Field in Loudon County, Va.
