GW’s Greatest Games: 5 – GW 13, Georgetown 7

Nov. 20, 1948
Football

The week before, GW had lost to Duke 62-0. But far more demoralizing was the 58 years of futility the Colonials had experienced vs. the Georgetown Hoyas. In 17 tries since 1890, GW had never beaten the boys from up the hill. But two touchdowns in the second half propelled GW to the victory at Griffith Stadium, sending students into a spontaneous march down Pennsylvania Avenue. They ended up in the Capitol Theater, where they stormed onto the stage during a newsreel and sang Hail to the Buff.

They dropped football the next year, said manager George Brown. They figured if they couldn’t beat GW, might as well drop it.
