Men’s Basketball
There could be no other pick for The greatest game of all time. That’s what The Hatchet declared this epic victory at the time – and who are we to argue with that?
It was the perfect timing, the perfect game and the perfect audience. The students who slept in the snow the night before already knew this game at the Smith Center with No. 1 UMass was special. But when the Secret Service arrived in force in the morning, foretelling the surprise presence of President Bill Clinton and his daughter, all the day needed to be perfect was a monumental upset.
And behind Kwame Evans’ 27 points and Vaughn Jones’ clutch free throws with 4.6 seconds left, the rocking Colonial faithful found it.
Although the 1996 consensus Player of the Year Marcus Camby was injured for this game (but who remembers that?), the Colonials took care of any doubters by beating No. 5 UMass on the road a week later and No. 1 UMass again on the road the next year.
