An NBA-sanctioned charity game, which was set to take place Saturday at the Smith center, was canceled Tuesday because of low ticket sales.
The All-Star Classic in the Capital was scheduled to feature a variety of NBA star players such as Chris Webber and Marcus Camby.
Only 37 of the $20 and $30 tickets had been sold. Those who purchased tickets can be reimbursed by contacting TicketMaster.
Basketball Notes:
– Charles Hayward, a 21-year-old basketball player at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, died Sunday in Chapel Hill after fighting leukemia for the past two years.
After a year of treatment, Hayward fought the disease into remission last season and was able to play for the team. On Nov. 29, 1998, in his fourth game at UNCC, he played 24 minutes against GW as the 49ers handed Tom Penders his first loss as the Colonials’ coach. Hayward scored eight points, had seven rebounds and recorded a UNCC freshman-record six blocks that night. GW plays UNCC again this season Dec. 31 in the Smith Center.
– The full GW men’s and women’s basketball schedules were released. The schedules will be printed in The Hatchet’s Basketball Preview, Nov. 8, but for now, they are available at www.gwu.edu/~gwsports.- Former GW recruit Jamal Brown’s reported decision to go elsewhere seems a foregone conclusion now. Reports Tom Penders: “He’s been given his total release. We’re not recruiting him.”
– False rumors circulated this week that GW was recruiting Tamir Goodman, the area player who had formally given a verbal commitment to Maryland and had garnered national attention because he was an Orthodox Jew.
“We are not recruiting him,” Penders said.
