If the GW women’s basketball team’s season-opening win Monday was any indication, junior guard Elisa Aguilar will be a dominant force in the Atlantic 10 and the nation this year.
Her 29 points, 17 of which she poured in at torrid pace in the second half, won the game for the Colonial women, and her constant desire to play makes GW head coach Joe McKeown’s job easier.
“The only adjustments I make with her is if she asks for a new pair of shoes or socks or whatever,” McKeown said. “I just make sure she’s on the bus and at the gym on time.”
Aguilar was 10 for 17 from the field with four three-pointers and three steals. The Lady Hoyas used three different defenders against Aguilar in the second half, but Georgetown’s strategy was ineffective against the talented guard.
Aguilar, who played 39 minutes in the opener, was running the court and finding open players on the break, which led to her game-high six assists.
For Aguilar, who will probably move from point guard to the shooting guard position when transfer Kristeena Alexander becomes eligible in December, her philosophy is quite simple.
“I just want to play,” Aguilar said.
