The GW women’s soccer team picked a bad time to have its offense go cold.
The Colonial women were shut out by Xavier 2-0 Friday night at Baujuan Field in Dayton, Ohio, in the second semifinal of the Atlantic 10 Tournament to end GW’s season.
Xavier went on to win the A-10 title with a 2-1 win over Dayton Sunday.
GW (11-10) managed just eight shots against the Musketeers, who had 20 shots. Xavier (12-6-2) also outshot GW 11-3 in the second half.
Junior Katy McQuillin created much of GW’s offense with five of her team’s eight shots. Xavier’s sophomore forward Annette Gruber finished the match with an A-10 Tournament single-game record of 10 shots.
Xavier took the lead just before halftime and never looked back. Stacy Kuhl knocked in a crossing pass from Katie Hubbard in the 42nd minute to give the Musketeers the 1-0 lead. Neither player had scored a point during the regular season, and both entered the game six minutes before they connected for the score.
Xavier added to its lead in the 79th minute when Christie Reinshagen headed in a free kick from Erin Coley.
Junior Rima Sidhu protected GW’s net in the first, notching four saves and giving up the winning goal. Freshman Shannon Ashfield allowed Xavier to take the 2-0 lead in the second half but made five saves.
